Foot Foundation and Sports Balance System SBS
Provide thoughtful solutions, to life's most basic biomechanics problems. To help people, live the life they love, to love the life they live.
Does it hurt to be you?
If you suffer from a lifetime of chronic unresolved pain issues, you owe it to yourself to read more. We understand what its like to be you. We can appreciate why you knees hurt, and has for so long. We empathize with how your hip constantly bothers you. and why you have sprained your ankle so many times in your life. Why your knee blew out, and why your back hurts. I Can't tell you why it hurst more just before it rains, but I know we can help you understand yourself better and how your feet may be the root of all these evils.
The main problem in life, balance and the pursuit of happiness is often simply a matter of how much you pronate, and supinate. The story is not as simple as people think. ITs a problem that is alive, and dynamic, it lives and breathes. But it works from behind the curtain. Its not always obvious that the cause of the problem you may have might be coming from your feet. Thats why, to know for sure, you need to get tested for pronation with SBS, from The Foot Foundation.
Most important thing to understand about pronation and supination
Pronation; is a structural collapsing of the bones within the foot. It happens when the muscles are not firing. THere is a structural bias that lives in the foot and like the leaning tower, even if you fix it, it will always want to fall over towards the big toe side of the foot.
Supination, is a muscular recovery. Because of the foots structural bias, which causes it to constantly fall inwards. There exists an equal and opposite muscular bias to match. The muscle groups that pull the foot outward are Anterior Tibialis, Posterior Tibialis, primarily. Those gripping toes, and cramping arches also your foot fighting to stay in position. All working together to hold the foot from falling inwards but the moment muscles stop working, the structure imediatly collapses again.
And so begins the cycle of balancing dynamically. Collapse, followed by recovery. the more the foot collapses, the more the muscles have to fight for your balance. Every step of the way. Its no wonder that the worlds best athletes have two common threads when it comes to feet. They tend to pronate less than 2.5 degrees. They tend to pronate very symmetrically, usually less than 1.5 degrees of asymmetry.
So then, pronation and supination are opposites ends of a dynamic balancing spectrum of movements. like breathing in and out. Like any other joint, there are equal and opposite unconscious actions all over our bodies. blinking, walking, flexing extending, etc…
Measuring pronation is what The Foot Foundation is in the business of doing. The huge difference, we measure your balance, while your balancing on one foot. Only one footed dynamic balance testing, will give you the data stream needed to understand exactly when the foot is in it's most neutral position. The outcome is symmetric, neutral pronation for each foot individually. This process is what we call, SBS, or Sports Balance System. It is patented, Its unique attribute is that we give precise measrument of what your foot issue is, what is causing your foot pain. Then because of our unique measuring process, we provide a product that does exactly the same thing inside any shoe. So the experience that you tested and like, is exactly the same when you put it under your foot, everywhere you go. Foot pain, plantar facetious, hammer toes, knee pains, IT pain, hip pains, back pain, shoulder stress, and neck pain, can all be symptoms of chronic uncontrolled, asymmetric pronation, and bi-lateral over pronation. One, or both feet can over pronate. Often in an asymmetric pronation the healthy foot, will have to over compensate. This can be the cause of many of those annoying, chronic, and painful symptoms. Vuage knee pain, meniscus deterioration, knee replacement, hip replacement, can be the result of life long exposure to exactly this sort of uncontrolled pronation. Medial Meniscus deterioration, or bowed legs causing knee pain, is a common symptom of over pronation. Don't know if you pronate? Take the SBS test to figure it out for yourself.
Sports Balance System, SBS
Like an eye exam, for your feet. Instead of closing one eye, we stand you on one foot. Then test many different positions, until your balance comes into clear focus for you. Only you know when you are balanced, just like only you know when you can see clearly. We have tested the SBS foot beds, in every sport you can imagine, 97% of the time people appreciate the difference and are satisfied with the results immediately. Although the solution can cause some head scratching, the results are immediate and obviously better. 100% of people tested feel the difference immediately. Its not just a guess, our testing lets you fine tune your most fundamental balance experience, being on one foot. Then you can make the final decision for yourself. When you want to understand how much you pronate, all you will need, is one of our "starter kits". It will give you the tools, and techniques to measure, and then accurately test, any position you like, in any shoe you chose, for any sport, or activity, in work, life, or play. This process has been tested and works for any sport that requires you to balance actively in any activity that requires you to walk, run, stand, while pushing, or gliding. Want to bring your balance into focus? Get measured with SBS.
The give and take relationships of pronation and supination is dynamic, and equal and opposite. Meaning, the more you collapse structurally, the more you will need to recover muscularly. Think of a truck with real bad alignment, you will steer all day long, just to keep the truck going straight. Where as, in a European sports car, you can hold the wheel in one spot, or for a short time even let go of the wheel, and the car goes straight on its own. and the car remains "Neutral". Want to know where neutral is for your feet? Get measured with SBS.
Is where SBS, Sports Balance System was born. No other sport demands so much from our feet. Balance not just for aft, but side to side, and foot to foot. Each foot individually controls two independent platforms sliding over snow very quickly at times. Imagine trying to ride two motor cycles at the same time. while standing up, going down a mountain, on snow. Each foot would need to be able to do a lot in a short amount of time independently of one another. Being able to measure Pronation and supination, is the easiest way to predict who might, and might not, succeed. Ski boots are notorious for being painful. One of the top reasons people quit skiing is because of painful ski boots. Ask a good skier if their boots hurt. Often they are happy. Most often accomplished skiers don't have a large pronation issues. Ask someone that is in the terminal intermediate group. They often suffer with any number of foot ailments. like Cold/numb/painful toes, arch cramping, burning, sore, tired feet. painful ankles, pain on the outside of the foot, flat feet, poor ski performance, or asymmetric ski performance. Often these people are literally suffering with a large amount of pronation in one, or both feet. The ski technology demands that our feet be as neutral inside the boot as possible. So the naturally successful skiers are born with very little pronation. Skis are symmetric our feet need to be symmetric, and functional, inside the shell for the skis to work effectively. SBS is the first alignment process that works specifically with, shaped skis, skiing powered, carving in the corduroy, in the moguls, and work in rental boots. Rental shop boot alignment is finally available. Boots hurt? Get measured with SBS.
Skating & Cross Country Skiing
All of these sports enjoy one critical common thread. they are all about one simple thing… and its balance. You can't push or glide on skates unless you make one critical decision. You need to be able to balance on one foot for a certain amount of time, then the other. Repeatedly, rhythmically, and hopefully predictably with some amount of flow. So one footed balance testing needs to be done by anyone thats into this this sport seriously. Any sort of professional skating should implement an alignment test to make sure that the foot is neutral inside the skate before you lace them up. Your perfect balance point for every slap shot, triple toe loop, hockey stop, spin, figure skate, speed skate, roller blade, leaping, landing, roller skate, roller derby, roller figures, power skate, play hockey. You can see who needs SBS when they skate. Its about the stride cycle. The time it takes for the skate to go from initial contact, to push off. This time is measurable, short stride cycles are indicative of a problem. Fastest skaters have a long stride cycle. If you are constantly falling off your foot. Its hard to glide very far. So you collapse and have to catch yourself with the other foot. With no power in the push, no time to glide, you simply are running to stand up. Sound familiar? Get measured with SBS.
The way your feet balance you, matters in Golf as well. Golfing is a function of how well you balance, and the transfer of that balance, energy, and movement, from foot to foot. Needless to say, but I will anyways, "symmetric pronation", and "functional pronation" matter, a lot. If asymmetric pronation exists it will show up in either the back swing, impact, or follow through. Balance affects driving, fairway shots, hitting from the rough, chipping, and putting. Distance, and accuracy are also a function of balance or more specifically, exactly how much you pronate and supinate. Which can easily be measured and brought into focus using the Sports Balance System, or SBS. Balancing is an unconscious action even in golf. More accurately, balancing is the result of equal and opposite counter actions and contractions of bones and muscles. These being based on decisions made by the brain unconsciously. The more you relax the more athletic you can be. When your unconscious compensations require less tension, then more of you is available to make conscious athletic movements. This is the simple point of SBS or Sports Balance System. Done by measuring pronation. The now relaxed muscles can be involved in athletic movements. Balance just happens while we are thinking about other things like, the take away, stance angles, alignment, addressing the ball, set up, your grip, the swing plane, shot shaping, relaxation, yardage, swing thoughts, and the way you waggle. We never dawns on people just how much we are paying attention, to the unconscious side. Until you don't have to any more. To stop thinking over the ball, get measured and quiet the unconscious side of you, so the conscious side can grip it and rip it. Sports Balance System. SBS get measured today.
Muscles fire unconsciously to create balance. The problem, once they are being recruited for the fundamental task of standing you up. They are no longer available to be recruited for athletic movements. This fundamental functional tension that is a result of basic balance, is then a great predictor to exactly how athletic you may be. If by using the best foot positioning device for your best most efficient balance. For each foot individually, Then our basic net requirement for balance decreases. When we can reduce the most basic requirements for balance to their most efficient point, athletic movements can improve by the same amount. Its pure athletic profit. I can't think of a better use of newly improved balance, than in Golf.
Tennis, squash, table tennis, track, rugby, long distance running, Lacrosse, soccer, basketball. If you fix your feet for running sports you will improve your game, run longer, run harder, jump higher, run faster, hit it harder, hit it better, hit it more accurately, and win more often, if you have the feet that the natural athletes were just born with. We have been measuring the best athletes we can find in any sport. They all have two things in common. they all tend to pronate very little, less than 2.5 degrees, they pronate very symmetrically, using the patented SBS measurement method. So if you are not one of the lucky naturally gifted athletes. You owe it to yourself to get tested and set yourself up so that you can enjoy having neutral symmetric feet like the "natural athletes" do.
Walking, or standing
All day long at work life or play, where ever you go, what ever you might do, bad feet can cause much of your chronic daily pain symptoms. Many just don't connect the dots form the foot to what every your pain may be. If you suffer from painful feet after a normal day at work, you need to find out how your feet are affecting the rest of you. Pronation can be the cause of many vague pains in any part of your body. Pains in the feet, ankles, knees, hips, back, shoulder, and neck can result of how your feet balance you. In the foot muscles, bones either work together or tear each other apart. its like marriage. If you are not working together to make life easier, you end up working against each other by accident. Finding out about how your feet work. They are either with you or against you. THe only way to know for sure is to get tested using SBS or Sports Balance System.
Endurance sports, adventure races, tough mudders
Tri-athalons, bi-athalons, cycling, Iron mans, marathons all make huge demands of the feet. Now the coolest thing about SBS is that we have different solutions for different activities. Cycling and running have very little to do with one another. Except we use our feet in both. However how our feet work in these two sports, could not be more different. So one cookie cutter solution for both could become a major problem waiting to happen after miles and miles of pounding, or spinning. So when on a bike and getting your fit kit on. This is a moment where we are in a Spin, or spinning with our feet to crank out the Amps. Our solution for pronation in running is unique to us and will simply blow your mind. Measure pronation and stop as much of it as you like. But the only way to know for sure is to get yourself tested by SBS.
Horse back riding, polo, When we put our feet in the stirrups the horse can feel our asymmetry. Pronation and dressage go together like peas and carrots. If you know how your feet work then you can predict what sort of information your horse may be getting from you. IF your feet are asymmetric, then your horse may be as well. Hunter jumper, english, western, and saddle bread will all find having neutral feet in the saddle a new and enlightening experience. The tension that runs through your legs because of your feet may be the problem you have been trying to fix but just could not put your finger on what was causing the chronic problems on your ride. Polo players, to your back yard riders have a sense that something is wrong but may not know where the problem lives. If you have bad feet your horse may be hearing you saying two different things at the same time. Clear up the confusion, clear up the communication between you and your horse with SBS Sports Balance System and enjoy the ride.
Shooting, Hiking, Hunting, Fishing, Darts, Billiards, and Bowling
All have one common thread, how your feet work on the ground matters in how much fun you will have doing what ever you might do for fun. If your feet or any part of your body hurts while you are paying for fun it is horrible. To say the least. Walking for miles in the woods, is fun, and can be scary if you are miles out with foot problems. or that nagging pain again. When the name of the game is getting in and getting back out again. Don't over look the human bodies weakest link, the feet.
Don't be a quitter
If you know someone that has quit doing what they love to do. Was their participation always sub par in some way. Did they complain about discomfort or pain while playing. When someone gives up on fun, its a huge problem, we can usually intervene most successfully with these people. They need help in some way communication with the shoe, boot, ski, bike, you name it. If it hurts, its hard to enjoy. So lets figure out what the problem is, fix it, then see if you can Keep up, start to enjoy, strengthen, and begin to enjoy things that you should love to be doing. Not avoid because it hurts too much to play.
If there was a way to play lotto that improved your odds, would you be inclined to play more often? Injuries in sports, in life, or on the job, are usually life changing moments, that we all want to avoid. Because we are not all created equal, at least not physically. Odds are, that after enough time, doing what ever you do. Eventually, everyones number might come up. Are there any ways to predict at all who might get injured, and why? It turns out that there are some ways to place people into similar risks groups by looking at some specific things such as. Overall strength along with muscular flexibility, joints physical range of motion, and the strength ratios of opposing muscle groups. Take this lens, and begin to look at each joint in the body. But where to begin? there are so many joints that get injured. ankle joint, knee, hip, pelvic girdle, sacrum, spine, shoulder, neck. Well it turns out that the only constantly active physical relationship we have to anything, is through our feet, connecting us to the world every step of the way. It happens every time we take a step, skip, leap, jump, stride, walk, glide, run, and play. So lets start looking there. Yes there is also a lot of contact at the chair level as well but that does not often cause athletic injuries.
A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Within our bodes, our weak links are the joints themselves. Over use Injures often are located in a joint. Injuries not involving joints would often be blunt force injuries. So when looking at over use injuries you almost always are looking at symptoms involving joints. Its not just the bones its the ends of the bones, where soft tissue that make up the lubricated ends of bones. The exact lever points that give the muscular insertion points meaning. The natural biases balance each other out as the tension of basic balance streaks up the kinetic chain of body parts, every step of the way.
An incredibly complex repeat performance that happens every time we place our foot on the ground and balance on it. Which, by the way, requires no conscious effort on our part. If you were to program a robot to recreate these million decisions per second. You might find new respect for the fact that we still robotics can't come close to mimicking human movement balance agility, locomotion, and finesse, under incredibly difficult athletic conditions, with any proficiency. To program a robot that is a like framed monoped, simply to climb aboard its one foot, and just relax and balance would require some very sophisticated software. To, chew gum, juggle, tight rope, slack line, ride bikes, be athletic on top of it would be a life time of programing to recreate with robotics. Suffice to say, I want to know as much as I can about how our bodes work at this most amazing miraculous moment of balance. Don't you? SBS provides you the tools, the methodology, and solutions, to do just that.
There are only two kinds of injuries
The subject of injury needs to be broken down into two groups. impact injuries, and over use systemic failure. Impacts and just joint wrenching accidents are not really avoidable, by training or education. So lets leave that to luck. The over use, long term chronic pains that end up becoming injuries. on either the weak side, or the over compensating side. We should try to understand the why, and how of these symptoms. Looking at lower limb, leg, back, and upper body pain we need first begin from the bottom of the chain reaction, the most basic of the human condition. The moment of balancing on one foot. By understanding the biomechanics of how the foot can affect the rest of the chain is where we begin. The Foot Foundation is a play on words as that is exactly what we do is provide the proper foot foundation that neutralizes the foot into a specific place based on our patented measuring process.
Pronation and supination
Predictable factors in human dynamics and if you can accurately predict how much someone pronates you can also predict the likely hood of certain specific injuries that are chronic non operable pains, that, often go un diagnosed, or diagnosed as vague pain. arthritis, tendonitis, sprains, strains, muscle pulls, shin splints, sprained ankles, medial meniscus tears. bone on bone, hip pain, scoliosis, leg length issues. Any asymmetric alignment in the fundamental foot structure, will cause asymmetric movements, will recruit and strengthen muscles asymmetrically, and may be a trigger mechanism, for any of these problems. Asymmetric muscle requirement will strengthen muscles asymmetrically. This can be the cause of certain pains, and wear joints asymmetrically.
SBS, Sports Balance System
When pronation happens, the effects are dealt with by your body each and every step. We either fight to control it, or give in to it. The only way to avoid it, is by not letting it happen in the first place. This can be done using custom canted foot support orthosis. Doing this, demands that you know a few important things. How the foot bones work, how the muscles work, how your brain works, and finally how balance is an active outcome of these three key interdependent relationships. This is the basic fundamental effort that we employ with SBS. Sports Balance System measures pronation, this measurement is used in a formula which produces the final number for which custom angle to use in any shoe for any sport you love in work life or play.
The way the foot works
The foot is made of, bones, muscles (connective tissues), nerves, and some blood. Bones are simple structure but the system of bones strung together with ligaments, creates a spring loaded tripod like sculpture, linked together at the end of the bones. This dynamic sculpture creates the system of levers for the muscles to pull on.
The way the muscles work
Muscles are interesting, in that they do two things, they turn on, and off. When they are on, they get shorter, turn them off and they get longer. They are interesting in that they also work like a dimmer switch so that they can pull stronger or softer. or stay at one setting. Duration and intensity are how these efforts are measured. So the muscles fire over a period of time with a certain effort to create balance. Some efforts we make are conscious and many others are completely out of our conscious control.
The way the brain works for balance
It starts in the foot. Proprioception is the bodes internal internet. It lets the bones speak to the muscles through the brain. Loads in the joints tell the brain what it needs to know to make decisions. then once the decision has been made a message goes out to muscles to take care of the problem. Information from many parts of the body are brought together in the brain for calculations to be made and messages to be programed and sent out to our extremities. This system of nerves, and brain are omni present within the body. It is a simple miracle of natural programing that we enjoy the technology that we reside within.
A dynamic system of decisions that power, fulcrums, pulleys, and levers, and motors. The bones can stack up but they go nowhere, or fall over quickly without the muscles, and the muscles don't know what to do, without the brain. The simple way to describe it is as a dynamic cyclical relationship that constantly is re-proping itself up. The foot has bones and joints that make it a truly amazing structure that can read the world its on, and the direction of travel of the Center of mass, of the entire structure is heading in. It tells the brain exactly how much tension is currently in each joint in real time so the brain can decide which muscles combinations need to be recruited, for how long, and how hard, to accomplish any goal. Continual balance, flow from one athletic movement to the next. If a fundamental segment of the system continually is collapsing, either a little or a lot, it will be a key predictor in the math formula that creates and sustained balance, and athletic movements.
